General information
Throughout
the years Poreč has received, by far, the most awards and
acknowledgments in various categories given by the Croatian Tourist
Organization and the Croatian media. The reason why it is the leading Croatian
tourist destination is because of the mutual efforts by the city administration and the hotels. Each year by the end of the winter various projects start in and around
the city as a preparation for the incoming tourist season. In the summer months
the number of tourists greatly exceeds the number of residents.
The
sun and the sea are not the only things that
Poreč has to offer to a visitor. A walk through the historical city centre will
take you through the long and rich history of this Mediterranean city. While
you stroll through the city centre you may not know that the streets you are
walking on have been constructed by the Romans over 2000 years ago. Parts of
the ancient city walls and towers have been preserved and given a new function;
the Pentagonal tower is now a very unique restaurant while the Round tower is a
bar. Many of the beautiful city palaces currently host art galleries and museums, but
most of the ancient buildings are still homes for local residents, as they have
been for centuries. Besides the Euphrasius' Basilica, which is a monument
protected by the UNESCO, the bishopric has been opened to the public since 2000 as an
architectural monument and a church museum.
